FAQ

Product Overview

This drum‑style hydraulic grinder mounts on the excavator boom and runs off the auxiliary circuit. It grinds stumps below grade so the area can be backfilled and restored immediately. Unlike shears or pullers, it reduces the stump to chips, reducing the need for stump removal and haul-away. Three models (TG‑SG04, TG‑SG06, TG‑SG08) cover 1.5–30 ton carriers, with cutting diameters of 400, 600, and 850 mm, and max depths from 590 to 900 mm. Torque ranges from 13,700 to 43,000 Nm across the three models. It is commonly used by tree services, landscapers, and municipal crews. For other removal methods, see the excavator stump removal attachments lineup, including the excavator stump shear and excavator stump puller.

Grinding System and Drum Design

The grinder features a low‑speed, high‑torque piston motor with a mechanical seal to keep out debris. The drum is made of high‑strength steel with greaseable bearings and carbide teeth in bolt‑on or weld‑on holders, arranged for smooth, balanced cutting. The shroud contains chips and directs them downward, protecting the operator and machine. The housing is heavy‑gauge steel with reinforced wear zones.

Application Matching by Size

Compact Excavators (1.5–5 t)

The TG‑SG04 (400 mm cutting diameter, 590 mm max depth, 195 kg) is built for mini excavators. Ideal for residential lots, property perimeters, and utility corridors. Its 30–130 L/min flow range matches compact machine auxiliaries. The cutting diameter is 400 mm. Workable stump size varies with geometry, density, and grinding approach; larger stumps can be reduced by grinding from the edges inward.

Mid‑Size Excavators (6–14 t)

The TG‑SG06 (600 mm cutting diameter, 700 mm max depth, 285 kg) is suited to mid-size excavators and commercial stump-grinding applications, including tree service, commercial sites, and municipal work. Its 16,900 Nm first-gear torque is configured for heavy-duty stump grinding. Flow 65–150 L/min and pressure 150–250 bar fit common mid‑size auxiliary circuits.

Large Excavators (14–30 t)

The TG‑SG08 (850 mm cut, 900 mm depth, 575 kg) is for high‑volume land clearing and large hardwood stumps. The TG‑SG08 provides 43,000 Nm of first-gear torque and 110–220 L/min flow requirement for large-carrier stump grinding applications. Verify lift capacity on 14–16 ton machines.

Installation and Mounting

Each grinder ships with a custom bracket matched to your excavator's pin spacing, pin diameter, and stick width. Supply the carrier make, model, pin dimensions, and auxiliary flow/pressure ratings at order — bracket sizing and carrier lift capacity are verified before shipment. Quick‑coupler configurations are available. Install by removing the bucket, pinning the bracket, and connecting hoses to the auxiliary circuit (pressure, return, and case drain if required). On mid-size and large carriers, route hoses with adequate slack for full boom and stick movement. Before first use, set auxiliary flow and pressure within the specified ranges for your model, confirm drum rotation direction, and grease bearings. The high-torque piston motor depends on correct flow and pressure settings — always verify before operation. Inspect teeth and hoses before each use.

Maintenance and Wear Parts

Primary wear items are carbide teeth — replace when chipped, worn flat, or missing. Inspect before each use; worn teeth reduce cutting efficiency and increase load on the high-torque motor. Grease drum bearings every 8–16 hours, and more frequently under heavy or continuous use. Check motor seals, hoses, and housing for damage. Replacement wear parts — teeth, holders, bearings, seals, hoses, and pins — are stocked for all three models. Keeping a stock of common wear parts minimizes downtime on job sites.

Frequently Asked Questions

How deep can an excavator stump grinder grind?+

TGEC stump grinder models offer maximum grinding depths from 590 to 900 mm: the TG-SG04 reaches 590 mm, the TG-SG06 700 mm, and the TG-SG08 900 mm. These depths remove the stump crown and major roots below grade for most landscape restoration and construction applications. The operator follows the stump and main root channels below ground; required depth varies with root structure and site restoration needs.

What size stumps can the TG-SG06 grinder handle?+

The TG-SG06 has a 600 mm cutting diameter, 700 mm max depth, and 16,900 Nm first-gear torque, configured for 6–14 ton excavators and commercial stump-grinding applications. Workable stump size varies with geometry, wood density, and the grinding technique used. Wider stumps can be reduced by working from the outer edges inward until the full drum engages, though this takes more time. For larger stumps or high-volume land clearing, the TG-SG08 provides an 850 mm cutting diameter and 43,000 Nm first-gear torque.

How often do the carbide teeth need to be replaced?+

Carbide tooth life varies with stump type, soil conditions, and grinding volume. Inspect teeth before each use and replace when the carbide tip is worn flat, chipped, or missing, or when the tooth body loses its cutting geometry. Worn teeth reduce cutting efficiency, increase motor load, and accelerate holder wear. TGEC supplies replacement teeth for all models — keeping a spare set on hand allows quick field replacement.

Can a stump grinder be used on a mini excavator?+

Yes. The TG-SG04 is designed for mini and compact excavators from 1.5 to 5 tons, with a 195 kg operating weight and 30–130 L/min flow requirement that matches common mini excavator auxiliary circuits. Its 400 mm cutting diameter and compact footprint work in confined yards, foundation perimeters, and fence lines. The disc stump grinder models (TG-DSG360, TG-DSG450) are also available for 1.5–7 ton machines as an alternative for very tight access. When using any grinder on a mini excavator, verify lift capacity at working reach — the grinder weight plus downward grinding force affects stability, especially on 1.5–2 ton machines. Ensure auxiliary flow falls within the specified range.

What hydraulic flow does the stump grinder require?+

Flow requirements vary by model: TG-SG04 needs 30–130 L/min, TG-SG06 65–150 L/min, TG-SG08 110–220 L/min. The auxiliary circuit must deliver flow within range for the drum to operate at designed speed and torque. Insufficient flow slows the drum, reducing efficiency and risking stalling in dense wood; excessive flow over-speeds the drum, increasing wear on motor, bearings, and teeth and raising chip-ejection risk. If auxiliary flow is adjustable, set it to the middle of the specified range. Working pressure also varies: 110–250 bar (TG-SG04), 150–250 bar (TG-SG06), 180–350 bar (TG-SG08). Provide your excavator flow and pressure specs so we can confirm compatibility.

Is the stump grinder better than a dedicated stump grinder machine?+

An excavator-mounted grinder uses the carrier you already own — no separate machine to purchase, transport, or maintain. The excavator provides reach for slopes, obstacles, and tight sites, and the same operator handles tree removal, loading, and grinding. Dedicated self-propelled grinders (walk-behind or ride-on) move quickly between stumps on flat ground and may have larger wheels for very high-volume routes, but they require physical maneuvering and a separate transport. For tree services and landscapers that already run excavators, the mounted grinder can be a practical option that uses existing equipment. For operators focused exclusively on high-volume stump grinding on accessible flat sites, a dedicated machine may be more efficient.

Can the stump grinder grind roots as well as stumps?+

Yes. After grinding the stump crown, the operator can follow and grind major surface roots outward from the stump, removing them below grade to eliminate tripping hazards and prevent regrowth. The carbide teeth can encounter soil when grinding below grade, but soil contact accelerates wear compared with grinding clean wood. For deep root systems, the drum follows main root channels to the model's max depth (590–900 mm). For construction site prep requiring complete root removal beyond grinding depth, the excavator stump puller extracts the entire root ball in one operation. For most landscape and tree service work, grinding the stump and major surface roots is sufficient.

What safety precautions are needed when operating a stump grinder?+

The primary hazard is flying wood chips and debris. Keep all personnel outside the debris flight zone before starting the drum, and ensure cab glass is intact. Wear safety glasses, hearing protection, hard hat, and steel-toe boots. The drum shroud contains most debris, but chips can escape from the front and bottom, especially at stump edges. Inspect hydraulic hoses before each use; never touch the drum or teeth while the system is pressurized. Position the excavator on stable, level ground and check for overhead utilities and underground services. On larger carriers, be aware of swing radius and attachment weight. Operate within manufacturer specifications to minimize risk.

Do you offer OEM or private-label stump grinders?+

Yes. TGEC offers OEM and private-label programs for excavator stump grinders, designed for dealers and distributors serving contractors, municipalities, and land-clearing fleets. We build drum-style grinders under your brand with custom paint, logo placement, packaging, and operator documentation. Because the line spans 1.5–30 ton carriers with flow requirements up to 220 L/min, we can configure brackets and hydraulic setups for the carrier classes common in your market, including high-flow auxiliary systems. Private-label wear parts — carbide teeth, bearings, seals, and hoses — support your after-sales service. Flexible MOQs and volume pricing are available. Contact our OEM team with your market and volume details.

How does the stump grinder compare with the disc stump grinder?+

The drum-style grinder uses a horizontal rotating drum with teeth around the circumference, delivering a wide cutting swath that removes more material per pass — suited to large stumps and high-volume work on 6–30 ton carriers. It offers 590–900 mm depth and 13,700–43,000 Nm torque for dense hardwoods. The disc stump grinder uses a vertical rotating disc, is lighter (180–192 kg vs. 195–575 kg), runs at 800–1300 RPM, and suits 1.5–7 ton mini excavators in very confined spaces. The drum is generally suited to commercial and municipal applications; the disc is optimized for compact-access residential work. Choose based on carrier size, stump dimensions, access constraints, and required depth.
