Excavator Compatibility Guidance

TGEC auger drives cover excavators from 1.5 to 30 tons. Each model has specific hydraulic flow and pressure requirements, and the excavator needs an auxiliary circuit to power the drive motor. The TG-EG2000 requires 40 to 75 L/min at 80 to 170 bar, while the TG-EG30000 requires 100 to 150 L/min at 100 to 170 bar. Drive weight ranges from 55 kg to 485 kg, so mini excavator operators should confirm the machine can handle the drive weight plus drilling load at working reach. Custom mounting brackets are supplied for your specific excavator make, model, and pin dimensions.

Typical Applications

  • Fence and post installation: Drill consistent round holes for wood, metal and vinyl fence posts, sign posts and guardrail posts.

  • Footings and foundations: Drill pier holes for deck footings, building foundations, pole barns and structural supports.

  • Tree planting and landscaping: Drill holes for tree and shrub planting in compacted soil or large-scale landscaping projects.

  • Utility and municipal work: Drill holes for utility poles, street light bases and traffic signal foundations.

  • Agricultural installation: Drill post holes for farm fencing, livestock enclosures and pole barns.

Working Principle

Pressurized hydraulic fluid from the excavator's auxiliary circuit drives the motor shaft, which feeds into a gear reduction set that drops speed and multiplies torque. The output shaft transfers that torque to the auger bit, where cutting teeth bore into the ground and spiral flights carry spoils up and out of the hole. The excavator boom provides down-pressure and lift while the operator regulates hydraulic flow to control drilling speed. High-torque, low-speed output is essential—too much speed without enough torque just spins the bit in place without penetrating, especially in compacted or clay soil.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an excavator hydraulic auger drive?+

An excavator hydraulic auger drive is a hydraulic attachment that mounts to the excavator boom and uses a hydraulic motor with gear reduction to turn an auger bit for drilling holes in the ground. It connects to the auxiliary hydraulic circuit and produces high torque at low rotational speed, ideal for earth drilling. The drive pairs with auger bits, extensions and adapters to handle different hole diameters, depths and ground conditions, and is commonly used for fence posts, sign posts, footings and tree planting.

What excavator sizes fit an auger drive?+

TGEC auger drives fit excavators from 1.5 to 30 tons across fourteen model sizes. The TG-EG2000 through TG-EG4000 cover 1.5 to 4.5 ton mini excavators, the TG-EG5500 through TG-EG10000 cover 3 to 10 ton machines, the TG-EG12000 through TG-EG15000 cover 13 to 17 ton excavators, and the TG-EG20000 through TG-EG40000 cover 15 to 30 ton carriers. Both tracked and wheeled excavators can be fitted, provided the auxiliary hydraulic flow and pressure match the model requirements.

How do I match an auger drive to my excavator?+

Start by matching the drive model to your excavator operating weight class. Next, verify that the auxiliary hydraulic flow and pressure fall within the model specified range. For example, the TG-EG2000 requires 40 to 75 L/min at 80 to 170 bar, while the TG-EG30000 requires 100 to 150 L/min at 100 to 170 bar. Consider the typical hole diameter and depth you need, as larger holes require more torque. Also check that the drive output shaft connection matches your auger bit or that an adapter is available.

What hydraulic specs should I check before ordering?+

Check the excavator auxiliary hydraulic flow in L/min or GPM and the maximum auxiliary pressure in bar or psi. Each auger drive model has a specific flow and pressure range. Also confirm whether the auxiliary circuit is proportional or on-off, as a proportional valve provides better speed control. Verify that a case drain port is available if the drive model requires one. Set the auxiliary relief valve to the model specified working pressure, not the excavator maximum system pressure.

Can the auger drive use a custom mounting bracket?+

Yes. TGEC supplies custom mounting brackets for a wide range of excavator makes and models including Caterpillar, Komatsu, Hitachi, Volvo, JCB, Kubota, Yanmar, Takeuchi and Bobcat. Both pin-on and quick-coupler configurations are available. Provide the excavator make and model, operating weight, pin-to-pin spacing, pin diameter and stick width, and the engineering team will supply the correct bracket. If the machine uses a quick coupler, provide the coupler brand and model so the bracket can be configured to match.

Can the auger drive work with a hydraulic quick coupler?+

Yes. The auger drive can be configured for use with most mechanical and hydraulic quick couplers. The mounting bracket is engineered to match the coupler interface, allowing the operator to switch between the auger drive and other attachments without manually driving out pins. When ordering, provide the quick coupler brand and model along with the excavator details. Verify that the coupler locking mechanism is fully engaged and the safety pin is installed before operating. Hydraulic quick couplers with automatic auxiliary line connection can simplify hose connection and reduce setup time where available.

What types of auger bits work with the drive?+

The auger drive accepts a range of bit types and diameters depending on the output shaft connection. Standard earth bits are designed for general soil, loam and topsoil. Clay bits have a specialized tooth pattern for sticky clay conditions. Rock bits feature carbide-tipped teeth for hard ground, compacted soil and light rock. Bits are available from 100 mm (4 in) for small post holes up to 600 mm (24 in) for footing work, depending on the drive, bit type, and required drilling application. The bit connection must match the drive output shaft size, or an adapter must be used. For detailed bit selection, see our auger bit selection guide.

Can the same drive handle different drilling applications?+

Yes. The same auger drive can handle multiple applications by changing the auger bit and using extensions. A 150 mm standard earth bit handles fence post holes in residential soil, while a 300 mm rock bit can drill footing holes in compacted ground. Extension shafts allow drilling beyond the standard bit length for deeper holes such as pole barn footings or utility pole bases. The key is matching the bit type and diameter to the ground conditions, and ensuring the drive has sufficient torque for the bit size.

Are auger extensions and adapters available?+

Yes. TGEC supplies auger extension shafts in various lengths to extend drilling depth beyond the standard bit length. Extensions connect between the drive output shaft and the auger bit, and are available in sizes matching the drive output shaft connection. Adapters are also available to connect drives with different output shaft sizes to auger bits with different connection standards, such as converting a 65mm round drive to a 75mm square bit. Replacement wear parts including output shaft bearings, seals, gear oil and hydraulic hoses are stocked for all models.

How do I maintain an auger drive?+

The primary maintenance items are the output shaft bearings and seals, which should be checked periodically for excessive play or leaks. Change the gear oil according to the recommended service interval for the specific drive model. Keep the hydraulic fluid clean and at the correct level, as contaminated fluid is the leading cause of hydraulic motor failure. Inspect auger bit teeth regularly and replace when dull or damaged, especially in abrasive or rocky soil. Check extension shafts and adapters for wear at connection points, as loose connections cause vibration and accelerated wear.

Can TianGe provide OEM auger drive configurations?+

Yes. TianGe offers OEM and private-label production for excavator hydraulic auger drives, with custom paint colors, logo placement, packaging and documentation. Volume pricing and private-label production are available for qualified dealer and OEM programs. All OEM units meet the same quality standards as TGEC-branded products, with private-label replacement parts and auger bits available for after-sales support.
