FAQ

Product Overview

A rotary grapple adds hydraulic rotation and requires auxiliary hydraulics, but it allows the operator to orient logs without repositioning the excavator. This is useful for truck loading, timber stacking and sawmill operations where log orientation affects placement. A fixed grapple may require carrier repositioning when a log needs to be reoriented, while a rotary grapple allows the operator to change log orientation independently of the excavator boom.

The TGEC rotary log grapple pairs an integrated hydraulic rotator with curved tines that cradle round logs securely. Offered in six rotator frame sizes—TG-LG30F through TG-LG160F—it covers small to large excavators. For applications requiring a dual-cylinder configuration, see the dual-cylinder rotary grapple; if rotation isn't needed, the mechanical grapple is a solid alternative.

Understanding the Rotator Specification

The spec table focuses on rotator parameters rather than complete jaw dimensions because the rotary grapple is a modular system—rotator unit paired with a jaw assembly chosen for your application. The rotator is a key factor in torque, axial load capacity, hydraulic requirements, and attachment weight. Jaw configuration (tine count, opening, profile) is matched separately. Displacement determines speed vs. torque—higher displacement = more torque, slower rotation at a given flow. Static and dynamic axial load ratings indicate the loads the rotator is designed to accommodate under the stated conditions; they should not be treated as the excavator's lifting capacity. Rotation and working pressures set hydraulic requirements. Contact TianGe for a full configuration recommendation.

Models & Specifications

All six rotator models share 250 bar rotation pressure and 300 bar working pressure. Displacement, axial load, and weight scale across the range.

Where Rotary Log Grapples Perform

Timber Yards & Sawmill Infeed

In timber yards and sawmills, the rotary grapple can orient logs for conveyor or infeed placement without requiring the excavator to reposition for every adjustment. Curved tines support round logs during handling, while hydraulic rotation allows the operator to change log orientation during placement. For repetitive timber handling, reduced carrier repositioning can help improve workflow efficiency.

Truck Loading & Log Transport

For truck loading, hydraulic rotation allows logs to be oriented parallel to the truck bed without repositioning the excavator for every adjustment. The operator can rotate a suspended log before placement and make orientation changes during handling. This can reduce carrier repositioning and simplify repetitive loading work.

Tree Service & Land Clearing

For tree service and land clearing, the rotary grapple can handle logs, branches and brush where the selected jaw configuration is suitable. Rotation helps orient material for stacking, loading or transfer in areas where frequent carrier repositioning is undesirable.

Hydraulic Requirements

The rotary log grapple uses separate hydraulic functions for jaw open/close and rotator rotation. The grapple cylinder is rated to 300 bar maximum working pressure, while the rotator is rated to 250 bar maximum rotation pressure. Displacement ranges from 330 to 1000 cm³, and required flow depends on the selected rotator and desired rotation speed. Connections are G3/8" for TG-LG30F and TG-LG50F and G1/2" for the four larger models. Verify the hydraulic circuit and case-drain requirements for the selected rotator configuration with the TianGe technical team before ordering.

Rotator Maintenance

The rotator requires regular inspection and lubrication according to the manufacturer's service recommendations. Check the hydraulic motor and connections for leaks, and inspect the case-drain circuit where applicable. Check rotator gear-reduction oil according to the recommended service procedure. Inspect cylinder rods, jaw hinge pins and mounting hardware regularly for wear, damage or looseness.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does rotator displacement affect rotation speed and torque?+

Displacement is the volume of oil the rotator motor requires per revolution. For a given hydraulic flow rate, a higher displacement rotator rotates more slowly but produces more torque, while a lower displacement rotator rotates faster but with less torque. TG-LG30F uses 330 cm³ displacement, while TG-LG160F uses 1000 cm³. For a given hydraulic flow, a higher displacement motor generally rotates more slowly and provides higher torque. Final selection should consider the excavator's available flow and the intended log-handling application.

What is the difference between static and dynamic axial load ratings?+

Static and dynamic axial load ratings describe the loads applied to the rotator under different operating conditions. They are not a substitute for the excavator's rated lifting capacity. When rotating a suspended log, the rotator rating, grapple weight, log weight, excavator lifting capacity and operating conditions should all be considered.

Why is a case drain required for the rotator?+

If a case drain is required for the selected rotator, it provides a return path for internal motor leakage and helps keep motor housing pressure within the specified range. The case-drain connection should follow the rotator manufacturer's hydraulic requirements. Confirm the case-drain requirement and connection method for your selected model before installation.

Can the rotary log grapple be configured for different jaw sizes?+

Yes, the rotary log grapple uses a modular design where the rotator unit is paired with a jaw assembly selected for the specific application and excavator. The same rotator model can be configured with different jaw opening widths, tine counts and tine profiles. For single-log handling on a sawmill infeed, a narrower jaw with fewer tines may be appropriate. For bundle grasping in land clearing, a wider jaw with more tines provides better retention. For utility pole handling, a specialized jaw profile may be specified. The jaw configuration is confirmed during the ordering process based on your excavator, typical log diameter and application. Contact our team with your requirements for a custom configuration recommendation.

How often should the rotator bearing be greased?+

Grease the rotator bearing according to the manufacturer's recommended lubrication interval. The required interval may vary with operating conditions. Use the specified grease type and quantity, and inspect the bearing and surrounding components regularly. Check gear-reduction oil according to the manufacturer's service recommendations.

What rotator size fits a 12-ton excavator for log loading?+

A 12-ton excavator does not have a single rotator size determined by operating weight alone. Final selection should consider auxiliary flow, required rotation speed, axial load requirements, jaw configuration, mounting arrangement, and typical log dimensions. Contact TianGe with your excavator hydraulic specifications and application requirements for a model-specific recommendation.

Can I use a rotary log grapple for brush and small trees?+

The rotary log grapple can also handle brush and smaller woody material where the selected jaw configuration is suitable. For dense or tangled vegetation, a dedicated forestry or land-clearing attachment may be more appropriate.

How does the rotary grapple compare to a fixed grapple for truck loading?+

For truck loading, a rotary grapple allows the operator to orient logs without repositioning the excavator for every adjustment. This can reduce carrier movement and simplify repetitive loading work. The trade-off is greater hydraulic and maintenance requirements compared with a fixed grapple. For occasional loading, a fixed grapple may be sufficient.

What maintenance does the rotator gear reduction require?+

Check the gear-reduction oil level and condition according to the manufacturer's service procedure. Use the specified oil and service interval. Inspect the housing, mounting hardware and seals for leaks or damage. Excessive noise, vibration or oil leakage should be investigated before continued operation.

Can the rotator be replaced without replacing the entire grapple?+

The rotator is specified as a separate component in the modular grapple configuration. Replacement procedures depend on the selected model and mounting arrangement. Contact TianGe for replacement-part and service information for your specific rotator.
